The show will open on February 15th and run through April 13th. On Thursday February 16th Brown will be on site for a conversation about her work with noted historian Frank Martin. This event will start at 4pm in the Fine Arts Center, in the Department of Visual and Performing arts at South Carolina State University. There will be a reception to follow. This event free and open to the public so please join us.

Brown’s photographs focus on cultural hierarchies relating to beauty, and how race and history play into these caste systems. Using a combination of performance and staged photography, Brown explores issues of identity and notions of otherness as defined by American standards of beauty. Through her work, Brown challenges accepted ideas such as the politics of the body with respect to race and gender.

Michaela Pilar Brown was born in Bangor, Maine and raised in Denver, Colorado, she cut her teeth in the halls of a museum where her mother worked as a security guard, and has been immersed in the culture of objects, their making, and interpretation ever since. She studied sculpture and art history at Howard University. In 2001 Brown moved to South Carolina and took on the role of full time caretaker of her ailing father. She then took a job as a curator of the Fairfield County Museum of Art in Winnsboro, SC., though at her core she was and still is an image and object maker. In 2010 she returned to full time studio practice.

In 2011 Brown was named Emerging Artist of the Year by Undefined Magazine. Last fall she was a Harvey B. Gannt Artist in Residence at the McColl Center in Charlotte, NC. She is also featured in the current issue of the Jasper magazine. In March, Brown will be an Artist in Residence at the Vermont Studio Center in Burlington, VT.

To learn more about Michaela Pilar Brown, please visit www.michaelapilarbrown.com

Frank McCauley Show Closes with Gallery Talk and Demo

The very prolific and talented Frank McCauley joined us this past Tuesday for a discussion of his work and a demonstration of his mixed media painting and printmaking techniques. Hunter that span over thirty years of creative activity. Exhibited at two sites on the campus of South Carolina State University, this presentation accompanies Hunter’s mid career retrospective The Grid Turns The Corner, which is currently on display in the galleries of the I. P. Stanback Museum at S.C. State. The earliest works included in The Grid Comes Full Circle date back to 1978 and features examples from Hunter’s students at Felton Laboratory School as well as works by Hunter’s students from both S.C. State and Claflin Universities. Also included are works from students Dr. Hunter taught at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts. The most recent works will be displayed at the Fine Arts Building FAB Gallery on campus. This version of the exhibition includes mixed media works by participants in the summer studio institutes conducted by Dr. Hunter during the past three years.

The presentation of these exhibitions is the culmination of a two-year, three-state, seven-city tour and provides a clear view of Hunter’s growth as an artist and teacher. The exhibition will be on view September 22nd – October 22nd. Please join us for this exciting event!

Posing Beauty is an exhibition of large-scale oil paintings exploring the experiences of women in a media saturated world. Lush colors and textures surround figures ripped from contemporary culture and personal experience. Karen says she is, “inspired by the cult of beauty in contemporary mass media, and exploring how this world affects my central female figures. By highlighting the dualities of confident but confused women and flat but somewhat three-dimensional compositions, I strive to present a personal yet universal depiction of the world of women.”
Karen Ann Myers is an artist, educator and curator. She received her MFA in Painting from Boston University and her BFA in Painting, Graphic Design and Art Education from Michigan State University. She is currently serving as the Executive Director at Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, SC. She was instrumental in coordinating the Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition, which has continued to be an annual exhibition at the 808 Gallery in Boston, MA.
Myers has exhibited extensively throughout the country. Her paintings and prints exist nationally in private collections and have most recently been exhibited at LUIS DE JESUS gallery in Los Angeles, CA, Robert Steele Gallery in NY, NY, at the Commonwealth Gallery in Boston, MA, and the Katzen Arts Center in Washington, DC . Upcoming solo exhibitions include SCOOP Studios in Charleston, SC. Karen is currently represented by SCOOP Studios in Charleston, SC.
To learn more about Karen Ann Myers, please visit www.karenannmyers.com.

Scotty Peek/Daughters

<img style="float: right; Peek is an Assistant Professor of Art in SC State’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The exhibition will be on display August 16- September 15, 2010.

Peek’s exhibit consists entirely of black and white photographs printed from film using traditional darkroom processes. Many of the artworks were made by first photographing the subjects with a digital camera then projecting the images on drawing paper where they were manipulated by the artist. Finally, the projected image with the added drawing elements is then photographed with a film camera.

On the subject of the artworks, Peek explains: “I spent most of the Summer of 2010 preparing our house and 4 year old daughter for the arrival of our second daughter. I often encourage my students to make artworks that reflect their activities and interests. With daughters occupying most of my energy, time and thoughts, I decided to take my own advice and make some art about little girls.”

Peek received a BFA from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN and an MFA from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Peek currently teaches all levels of Photography at SC State, as well as Art Appreciation and other Art Studio courses.
After receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Robinson worked as an assistant to Andy Rubin, the master printer at Tandem Press in Madison, Wisconsin. She later earned her MFA in printmaking from Indiana University-Bloomington in 2001, and taught at Indiana University-South Bend before coming to USC. Robinson works primarily in printmaking and drawing, and her imagery results from observing nature. She often uses the forms of trees and vines to express the flux of life (movement, growth, decay) and the interconnectedness of beings. She has received several awards and grants, and her work has been shown throughout the U.S. as well as in England and Australia.

            For more information about Mary, and to view more of her work, visit

this website.

Myra Greene / Character Recognition

FAB Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition by artist Myra Greene. The exhibition will be on view February 15th – March 15th. Please join us for this exciting event! Character Recognition is a series of forty-five close-up photographic images of the artist exploring her features in detail. “Confronted with an up swell of bigotry both personal and public, I was forced to ask myself, what do people see when they look at me.” muses Myra,” Am I nothing but black? Is that skin tone enough to describe my nature and expectation in life? Do my strong teeth make me a strong worker? Does my character resonate louder than my skin tone? Using a photographic process linked to the times of ethnographic classification, I repeatedly explore my ethnic features. The lessons learned are haunting and frightening in these modern times. “ Myra’s ambrotypes are created by exposing specially prepared glass plates to light. The technique predates more familiar photographic processes and harkens back to the era when slavery and colonization reined. Many of her projects include photography, printmaking, sound, as well as digital production work. The major themes in this work are dysfunction and repetition; or more specifically, the dysfunctional nature of repetition—the well-worn rut in the brain that leads to certain compulsions, negative thinking, and the otherwise fruitless over-workings of the mind. While specific themes are personal in nature, I believe one can also see these dynamics play out on the larger familial and societal scale.”

For more information about Kara, and to view more of her work, visit

her website.

Presenting: Professors!

FAB Gallery, located in the beautiful atrium of the Visual & Performing Arts Building, is pleased to present the 2009 Faculty Triennial Show.

Generally held every three years, these comprehensive exhibitions showcase the achievements of individual faculty members and highlight artistic developments in the department as a whole during the intervening period. Each exhibition is new and exciting. Many of the longer-term faculty members have been exploring exciting new art forms since the last exhibition and the work of new faculty members will be introduced to our community for the first time. One thing that remains constant is the broad range of media you will see -painting, sculpture, graphic arts, wood working, film installations, and computer-generated art-that is practiced and taught on our campus. The exhibition not only reflects the creativity and dynamism of the art department itself but also the current art scene across the United States.

This year's exhibition presents the works of Tolulope Filani, Lesile Rech, Steven Crall, Kimberly Ledee, Ellen Zisholtz, Scotty Peek, Frank Martin, Jonathan Walsh, and Jim Arendt. The diversity of approaches and techniques present in the exhibit defy easy categorization. Self-reflective, formal, pure, expressive, historical, and contemporary are all words that can be used to describe the works of these practitioners. It is our hope that the University and surrounding community will find these contemporary works of art to be both challenging and exciting.

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts continues to make bold moves in art production, inspiring students, the public, and our colleagues across the University. Stanback Museum is pleased to exhibit the hard work of our student body April 22nd-May15th.

Frank McCauley, Assistant Director and Curator at the Sumter County Gallery of Art, says, “I consider it an honor and privilege to have been asked to select work for this year’s South Carolina State University Student Art Exhibition. Both the high quality of the pieces submitted to the show, and the large number of works, made my task difficult, but at the same time enjoyable. These exceptional works demonstrate a high level of quality and ambition.

As is true of most juried exhibitions, the styles and themes of the works on display in this year’s Student Art Exhibition run the gamut. However, what seems to unite them all, in my opinion is a sense of sincere engagement with the world we live in today. Some artists seem to be responding to the political and social issues of our times, others look to the body and how it is represented through history or mass media, and still others delve into the realm of abstraction as a way of expressing emotion and meaning. Many address these issues directly, while others veil their works in fantasy, fiction, or historical reference. Together, these works speak volumes about who we are as a society and culture. “

Garnering special recognition from our guest juror were several works of art. 2009’s Best of Show The exhibition will be on view March 23, 2009-April 14, 2009. Please join us for this exciting event!
Joshua Ellingson lives and works as an illustrator in San Francisco, California. In 1999, Ellingson graduated art school and headed west. Since then, Joshua has contributed artwork to popular publications and websites worldwide and worked with clients ranging from toy makers to tequila companies. Much of his art is influence by technology, popular culture, the cosmos, and the potential of the human mind.
In addition to his illustration and design business, Joshua Ellingson is the director for The Local 303, a studio/collective of illustrators and designers in San Francisco, California. The Local 303 provides a professional working environment as well as a space for collaboration, critique and art exhibition. Joshua Ellingson also contributes editorial writing and reviews to Hi-Fructose, a contemporary art and culture magazine.
Originally from a small town near Flint, Michigan, Joshua spent a lot of his childhood at his grandparent's farmhouse. "I've got so many memories from that place. Because my grandparents were antique collectors, the house was loaded with interesting stuff. I was always in the workshop with Grandpa, working on a duck decoy or fashioning my own ninja weapon from chair legs. The house was completely rebuilt by my grandfather, and they even built a big red barn out back. My mother, my aunts and my uncle grew up in that house too so there's just so much history. Most of this series is about keeping that home and those memories close to me, carrying it with me. I don't know what I'm going to do when it's gone."
For more information about Ellingson, and to view more of his work, visit http://www.JoshuaEllingson.com.

Sara Schneckloth:Open Gestures:

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xLQu91hVg9c/SZrPSMCY8jI/AAAAAAAAATE/ukxuo2xZ6Yw/s400/encounter4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303779422558024242" />

FAB Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition by artist Sara Schneckloth. The exhibition will be on view February 18, 2009-March13, 2009. The Artist will be on campus to discuss her work on Monday, March 2nd at 1:00 p.m. in the Visual and Performing Arts Building's Barbara A Vaughn Auditorium. Please join us for this exciting event!
A 2006 graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program in painting and drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Sara Schneckloth has just joined the Art department at the University of South Carolina as an assistant professor of drawing. Known for large-scale, bold drawings that explore the relationship between our memories and our physical selves, Schneckloth has won numerous grants, fellowships and other honors, and has exhibited her work as far away as South Africa.
Schneckloth’s work deals primarily with imagined microbiological systems rendered on a macro- scale. She envisions and creates cells, organs, fluids, and tissues, and seeks to assemble the elements into new systems of organic relationship and connection. Schneckloth works in a variety of mediums, primarily in drawing and painting, and looks for ways to take drawing beyond its traditional definition of “mark on paper.” She integrates traditional techniques with non-traditional mediums and approaches to create large installation pieces of fantastic design.
Of her work, Schneckloth says, "I believe that the act of drawing is a way of residing in multiple states of awareness, of present, past, future of what one is, has been, and hopes to become of the physical, the mental, and the formal. I draw as a way to see more deeply, both inside and out, and to elevate the act of seeing to a process that is fully engaging of both body and mind."
For more information about Schneckloth, and to view more of her work, visit www.saraschneckloth.com.

Michael Cassidy: New Work

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 331px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xLQu91hVg9c/SWtjCsZY6vI/AAAAAAAAASk/EOjYgUYuzFI/s400/Cassidy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290431085205318386" />
FAB Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition by artist Michael P. Cassidy. Cassidy’s paintings, drawings, and prints emphasize a synthesis between traditional and experimental approaches to image making. Cassidy’s work challenges the viewer to reconsider the natural environment by skirting between recognition of image and surface. The exhibition will be on view January 15, 2009-February 15, 2009.

Michael Cassidy was born and raised in Michigan. A rural up-bringing created a deep seated connection to nature but an interest in art led him to the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan to attend Kendall College of Art and Design. Cassidy soon found his place in the fine arts department. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking in 2000 he continued making spiritually based, semiabstract works. Still an avid outdoors-man, Cassidy spent his free time exploring the natural world, but it wasn’t until a move to South Carolina for graduate school that Cassidy found nature an inspiration for painting. The vastly different natural environment of the South moved him to combine memories of adventures in the rural Midwest with new experiences in the swamps and forests of the South to make landscape based paintings and prints. Cassidy received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004, from the University of South Carolina, where he is now an instructor of drawing, design, printmaking, and painting. Living in West Columbia, he continues to draw inspiration from the diverse Southern landscape.

Graduation Nation

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 280px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xLQu91hVg9c/SWthwsTIS5I/AAAAAAAAASc/NW7inimjXac/s400/Grad+show+FL+08+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290429676429790098" />
FAB Gallery is pleased to present the class of 2008's Fall Graduation Show. In addition to site specific installations, Brilliant works in video, photography, digital imaging and googles himself regularly. He currently lives and works in South Carolina with his wife Brooke and their cat Zero. The exhibition will be on view October 20 – November 1, 2008.

Jonathan David Brilliant describes himself as a Southern Has-been and a British Wannabe. The exhibition will be on view September 10 – October 15, 2008.

Kathleen Robbins is an assistant professor and head of the art studio area’s photography program at the University of South Carolina. Her work is also included in several public and private collections including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. After receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2001 from the University of New Mexico, she taught at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, before joining the USC faculty in 2003.
